more about the craft

What isDokra?

Dokra style is a term that refers to the metal casting technique that originated in West Bengal, India, and is practiced by the Dhokra tribe. It involves making statues, jewelry, idols and other decorative pieces with clay, wax and metal. The most common metals used are brass and bronze, which give the Dokra style a distinctive golden hue.

The Dokra style is known for its primitive simplicity, enchanting folk motifs and forceful form. It has a rich history and cultural significance, dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization. It is also a living art form that continues to evolve and adapt to modern times.

the process of the craft

Dokra models are made through a traditional lost-wax casting technique; a method that is passed on to generations within the Dokra or Dhokra tribe.

Starting with a clay core, the craftsmen create the desired model with a mix of natural beeswax, resin and oil completely freehand. No dices or tools are used in this. Once the wax model is complete, another layer of clay is applied on top, which creates a sandwich of the wax model between clay parts. Then it is left to cure.

If one is to create replicas of the same model, same process is to be followed each time. There is no dice or mold casting in the Dokra craft. Each one of the pieces are crafted individually. That's why no two Dokra pieces are same, even if they carry the same design.

The craftsmen usually setup a community kiln to share the cost. Once every season, when the kiln is fired, the craftsmen bring in their wax models to cook them. Which melts all the wax away from the clay parts creating a hollow. When the molten alloys of brass and bronze are poured over it fills the cavity and takes the shape of the model.

Once cured, the clay parts are broken to reveal the unique piece of Dokra.

the depiction

Being a traditional craft, Dokra carries the symbols of a simple rural lifestyle. Small figurines of people playing tribal musical instruments, or working in the fields, fishing, children playing with animals etc. Idols and jewelries are made using this craft.

the ClickU medal

We at ClickU are proud to present this ancient piece of art through our salon and circuit medals which is made in this Dokra style depicting another traditional art form of Bengal, the "Baul".

Bauls are a group of mystic singers who roam around the countryside, singing songs of love, devotion, and liberation. They blend elements from Hinduism, Islam, and other religions in their lyrics, using poetic metaphors and symbols. They don’t follow the rules and rituals of mainstream society, but seek a direct connection with the divine through their music and dance. They use simple instruments like the ektara, the dotara, and the khamak to create a soulful, spontaneous, and expressive sound that has inspired many modern musicians in Bengal and beyond.
